The History of Greggs

Greggs was founded in 1939 by John Gregg. It started as a small, family-run business delivering eggs and yeast to Newcastle families.

The first shop opened in Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne, in 1951. Over the decades, Greggs expanded rapidly across the UK, becoming a staple on high streets everywhere.

We believe in simple, freshly prepared food that taste good and do good.

Key Milestones

1939: Founded by John Gregg in Newcastle.
1951: First shop opens.
1972: Greggs is listed on the London Stock Exchange.
2019: The launch of the famous Vegan Sausage Roll.
Today: Over 2,000 shops nationwide.
